Cheer Up Program will carry out the campaign ‘Restoring Smile to Adolescent Mothers and their Children’ in Kiambu County. Adolescent mothers are a critical and growing population that need more support if we are to end AIDS and achieve many of the Sustainable Development Goals. They can beat HIV and thrive in life. But they need to be empowered rather than discriminated against.
Increasing cases of SGBV is leaving many more adolescent girls pregnant which has become an epidemic phenomenon with the recent statistics showing that Kenya has the highest levels of adolescent pregnancies of 3 in every 10 girls between the ages of 13 years to 18years. After giving birth, these girls become butts of distasteful jokes and these results to stigmatization and as already observed, majority of these girls have their education terminated. In addition, the adolescent mothers are unprepared for motherhood hence they face financial hardship. They cannot adequately take care of themselves and their babies and if not helped they can be tempted to engage in sex again and the result will be more babies and equally spread of the dreaded HIV and AIDS.
The goal of ‘Restoring Smile to Adolescent Mothers and their Children’ campaign is to refocus the lives of vulnerable adolescent mothers through education and economic empowerment.
This will be achieved through raising Ksh. 3 million:
· To enable a return to the formal schooling system for adolescent mothers
o Activity: Re-enrolling some back to school where they dropped off
o Activity: Provision of scholarship (where fees was an issue)
· To enroll adolescent mothers to vocational skills training institutions (TVET)
o Activity: Enrolment in VTCs and apprenticeship programs
o Activity: Provision of scholarships to VTCs
· To build the enterprise development capacity of adolescent mothers
o Activity: Training in enterprise development (business start-up/growth)
o Activity: Linkage to financial services – loaning, grants, etc.
o Activity: Formation of common-interest groups e.g. SACCOs
· To link adolescent mothers to essential services
o Activity: Linkage to health services (including reproductive health)
o Activity: Linkage to government social protection services e.g. registration of births, identity cards, etc.
